MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Some teens in Milwaukee got their green thumbs after harvesting thousands of pounds of produce on Tuesday, Aug. 5.Â
Interns at Ascension All Saints Family Health Center have been working on the clinic's urban farm all summer and now they're reaping the rewards.Â
The clinic is growing lots of vegetables like peppers, squash, cucumbers and even fruits like apple and plums.Â
Staff at Ascension say it's part of a holistic approach to keep the community healthy and give kids in the area a fulfilling way to spend their time in the summer.Â
"The idea is a full circle, it's kind of like there's a track, an exercise area, kitchen and doctors inside. We kind of like to say out here we grow the food and inside we grow the doctors," said Jenny Ovide, community medicine clinical coordinator.Â
Now that the produce has been harvested, Ascension's partners will pick it up and take it to patients at other Ascension locations in the area. They'll also be sold off at local farmer's markets.Â
