Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating the culture of Puerto Rico

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An area group closed out Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the culture of Puerto Rico on Saturday, Oct.17.

The event took place at Serb Hall, where people enjoyed Puerto Rican food and music.

Organizers say events like these are important because people don't know a whole lot about the island, including that it's a part of the United States.

"I have Americans asking me how I got to this place. And I'm like, what do you mean? I'm a U.S. citizen. Puerto Rico is part of the U.S.. it's important so people can be educated that we're part of the culture too," said Luis Aponte, manager at American Serb Hall Banquet.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from mid-September to mid-October.
