Hank Aaron State Trail to close near State Fair Park during the fair

Hank Aaron State Trail

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A stretch of the Hank Aaron State Trail will close during the Wisconsin State Fair, running from Aug. 6 to Aug. 16, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced on Wednesday, July 29.

The trail will be closed between S. 76th and S. 84th streets where it passes through State Fair Park.

Officials say the closure is a security measure tied to efforts in recent years to secure the park's perimeter, including metal detectors, fencing and bag restrictions.

"We've consulted with public safety officials and believe this is a necessary security measure that will help to ensure the safety of our fairgoers, exhibitors, vendors, operators and staff," said John Yingling, chairman of the Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors.

Alternate routes will be available in both directions, with signage posted on the trail before the closure begins at 8 a.m. on Aug. 6. State Fair Park is also adding bike lane striping on North Street.
