Greenfield expands harm reduction efforts with additional Narcan vending machine
GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Greenfield has introduced a new vending machine at Fire Station 92 as part of its harm reduction program.
The city was selected to pilot one of two Narcan Vending Machines in Wisconsin through the Narcan Direct Program. According to a Thursday, Sept. 21 press release, the pilot was a success, distributing 1,500 Fentanyl test strips and 528 doses of nasal Naloxone in the first six months.
Following the successful first machine, a new Harm Reduction Vending Machine can be found at 4333 South 92nd St. It can be accessed year-round at any hour of the day or night.
The expansion aims to provide immediate access to free Narcan and other harm reduction supplies, with no questions asked.
"We continue to respond to an increasing number of overdoses every year, but we are starting to see more and more family members and friends deliver the lifesaving medication, Narcan, before we arrive on scene," said Dan Weber, Assistant Chief of the Greenfield Fire Department in the press release.
In addition to Narcan, the machine also offers supplies such as other supplies, such as gun locks, safer sex kits, nasal naloxone and fentanyl test strips.
Greenfield police note that between 2019 and 2022, Greenfield reported 58 fatal overdoses, 16 of which occurred this year.
