MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- Every two seconds, someone needs life-saving blood to survive. This blood drive at the Milwaukee County Zoo is one of two events looking to help.
Blood donations are especially needed at this time of the year because donations are low due to additional family commitments.
Donations of all blood types are needed, but there is a critical need for O negative donors, which is the universal blood type given to patients in emergency situations.
They are also collecting COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma or CCP from eligible donors who have prequalified. Donated plasma contains antibodies that can help seriously ill patients fight infection.
The Tripoli Center is also having a blood drive and CCP collection.
Organizers say even during COVID, donors can rest assured the process is safe and effective.
"You get your temperature checked when you come in, people are spaced out, we have a more rigorous cleaning among other things," Chief Communications Director of American Red Cross of Wisconsin Justin Kern said. "So, really abiding by those CDC guidelines and making sure people feel healthy and safe. It really is something that people can still do; they can get and give back by donating blood."
Both locations are accepting walk-ins and have a number of incentives like gift cards and free zoo entry.
