Multiple chances for strong to severe storms this weekend
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This summer, members of Girls Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast are learning the fundamentals of law enforcement, in a camp unlike any other called CampHero.
With Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) as the backdrop, 12 girl scouts took advantage of this summer to work side-by-side some of Milwaukee's finest.
The long overnight camp kicked off Monday, June 27, and has been full speed ahead.
The girls have had the opportunity to take part in simulated drills, which include active fires, high speed chases, and much more.
This is the seventh year the camp has offered girls a chance to see behind the curtain of law enforcement.
Veteran Milwaukee Sargent Amy Rivera tells CBS 58 this program allows for bridges to be built between first responders and community, saying, "From day one some of them (girls) are very shy and don’t even want to engage with the police, because somewhat of a stigma that is out there, and towards midweek they're over here laughing and joking with us and it's beautiful."
The Sargent goes on to say this program has the power to instill confidence -- shaping a new generation of women leaders.
Along with hero camp activities, the girls were also able to take part in traditional camping activities as well, like archery and hatchet throwing, wood burning/carving, campfire cooking and rock climbing.
