Get active to support Wisconsin's 'happy little trees' in the 'Happy Little 5K'

MADISON, WIs. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is aiming to provide a fun and meaningful way to get active throughout the state.

The "Happy Little 5K" is a virtual race, inspired by artist Bob Ross. Proceeds support tree planting and forest health efforts in Wisconsin state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas.

The deadline to register is quickly approaching, ending on Wednesday, March 1.

Anyone can participate, with a DNR press release issued on Friday, Feb. 24 saying that participants can " ... walk, run, skate, bicycle or use a mobility device. Participants can pick their start and finish lines for this 5k, 3.1-mile, race."

The race at a self-paced time, with the primary guidance being that the race should take place outside between Earth Day and Arbor Day, April 22 - 28. Those who sign up will receive a commemorative bib, finisher's medal and "Happy Little t-shirt."

The Happy Little 5K is a partnership between the Wisconsin DNR and the Michigan DNR. The race is an extension of the "Happy Little Trees" program that started in Michigan in 2019, which aimed to raise awareness of tree planting and forest protection efforts in state parks.

Those unaware of why the "happy little" phrase made its way into the title should know that the phrase was made famous by artist Bob Ross. A popular painter and television host in the '80s and '90s, Ross was well-known for his love for painting and the environment, guiding budding artists through the process of creating landscapes on canvas. As he often said while painting, he placed importance of adding "happy little trees" to the canvas.

Check out the DNR's OutWiGo webpage for sign-up information, as well as suggested 5K routes throughout Wisconsin to pick between when developing a route for the race.
