Fundraiser held to honor hometown soccer hero with mural

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A new effort to honor the memory of hometown soccer hero Jimmy Banks has been announced.

Banks took up soccer as a child in Milwaukee's Westlawn Housing Projects and went on to become one of the first American-born Black players ever to compete in the world cup.

After his playing career, Banks stayed in Milwaukee to coach and teach children.

Banks died of cancer in 2019.

In 2022, the stadium at Obama High School was renamed for Banks, and now, a group is trying to raise $40,000 for a public mural in his honor at the stadium. The money would also go towards scholarships for hometown kids.
