First Stage launches Amplify Reading Series with 'Big City Harmony'
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- First Stage's Amplify Reading Series is launching its 2023-24 season with a play reading titled "Big City Harmony" by Ty Defoe, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center.
According to a press release from First Stage, the reading aims to support the theater's goal of developing new work and highlighting voices of diverse playwrights and artists.
The narrative of the play follows Harmony, a young Anishinaabe girl, who relocates from her native reservation to a metropolitan area. As she embarks on a journey of making new friends and adjusting to a new school, she discovers the ability to shapeshift, a gift she shares with her grandmother Hazel. Set in a futuristic world, Harmony learns the language of wolves, aiming to free her voice into the wilderness.
The Amplify Reading Series will also offer readings from "Esperanza Rising" and "Emily Song and the Shadow Queen" during this season.
Doors will open an hour before the 7 p.m. reading. A post-reading talkback session will allow the audience to interact with the playwright and artists, offering insights that could influence the development of the plays and their potential future stagings at First Stage.
Tickets operate on a "Pay What You Choose" basis, with a suggested amount of $10. Tickets can be pre-ordered via phone at (414) 267-2961. More information can be found by visiting First Stage online.
