MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Families across our area are relying on food banks and pantries after the food assistance program known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) was recently halted as a result of the government shutdown. Now, local organizations are stepping up in this time of need.

That includes Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, who just launched their "Food for the Holidays" campaign.

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, about 50 volunteers -- including local comedian Charlie Berens -- helped pack items such as baby food, bakery goods, and snacks for families who need it most.

Feeding America hosts the campaign every year, but this year especially, the nonprofit says these resources are more important than ever.

"We always say we need three things, we need food, funds, and friends, and so whatever you are able to do, whether it's volunteer, provide financial donations, which we then use our scale and leverage them to purchase a lot of food for that, or donating food directly. All of those things are important, right now especially," said Patti Habeck, CEO of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.

Around 700,000 Wisconsinites rely on FoodShare programs and Feeding America says they will continue to push for donations as long as the uncertainty around SNAP benefits continues.
