Federally funded program gives Milwaukeeans a chance to become homeowners

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A federally funded program is guiding families to homeownership and affordable housing in the City of Milwaukee.

It’s called the Homes MKE Program, a federally funded program using American Rescue Plan Act funds.

“Really, really remarkable program where we work hand in hand with usually emerging developers, developers of color,” said Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

It takes vacant, city-owned and tax-foreclosed properties and turns them into affordable housing.

In Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood, it’s a new beginning for Gregory and Rashida Lowrey. The couple, who have been married for 32 years, will finally get to call this place their home.

“There’s so much more to do. It seems like you’re reborn. Like feels like we have to renew our vows. It’s great. It’s great. So much more room,” said Gregory Lowrey. “A stable home. We don’t have to worry about looking for another place to live and as the years go on, we can just keep it in the family.”

“Eight kids, they grown out, but some of them are still at home. It’s a good feeling. My grandkids are growing so it’s space for them as well,” said Rashida Lowrey.

Johnson says by having a home, people are more likely to invest and care for their city.

“I know that when folks have access to quality, affordable homes, and they’re able to have a permanent place to live. Folks, they care about their neighborhood,” said Johnson.

Johnson says 70 homes have been built throughout the city through this program.

For the Lowreys, this space is a reminder of the sacrifices they’ve made and the new beginnings they’ll share.

“I want them to not give up. I think we tried about three, four times. And if you get a no, just keep going,” said Lowrey.
