Federal Money Flowing into Milwaukee for Let's Move Program at Public Parks

Mayor Tom Barrett announced that the City of Milwaukee has been selected by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell as one of the 50 cities to become a priority community for First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Outside Initiative. This nationwide movement focuses on getting more kids to play, learn, serve and work outdoors.

The initiative, supported through a $5 million commitment by the American Express Foundation, will provide two years of funding for the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee to coordinate efforts, increase collaboration and grow public participation of outdoor programs at local parks, federal lands and bodies of water.

The U.S. Department of Labor is leading the effort in partnership with the First Lady. Milwaukee was chosen to be a Let's Move! City because of the City's vibrant public parks and strong network of public and nonprofit leaders within the community.
