Fans, athletes wear gold for Marquette University president battling cancer

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Marquette University President Dr. Michael Lovell was honored during a Marquette men's basketball game Sunday, Jan. 23.

The Marquette men's basketball team, along with fans, wore gold during their game at Fiserv Forum against Xavier.

It was a display of support for Lovell, who is currently battling cancer.

He was diagnosed with sarcoma in September 2021.

Lovell says he is thankful for all the support from the Marquette University students and staff.

"It's a special place, because people care more about each other and more about the university than it's ever been. It's really a family, and actually the coach had me speak to the team yesterday, kind of on my journey, and I got to share with them kind of what some of the things I'm going through. And just the support that all of them provided me afterwards, as were talking, was really amazing," said Dr. Lovell.

The players and coaches on the Marquette women's basketball team also wore gold uniforms and shooting shirts for their away game at Butler.
