MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Family and friends gathered to remember a 45-year-old man who was struck and killed on the Capitol Drive off-ramp from I-43 earlier this week.

The victim has been identified as James Spears. He was initially reported critically missing Tuesday before he was found around midnight Wednesday after being struck by a box truck, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy found Spears unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He's special to the community," said Jennifer Spears, the victim's sister. "Everyone knows him. When I say every street corner he goes on, every block he turns, they know that's Dancing James."

Jennifer Spears told CBS 58 her brother lived in a group home and had developmental disabilities.

The sheriff's office said the preliminary investigation indicates Spears was standing or walking in the roadway when he was struck. Investigators say the driver of the box truck was rounding a curve on the freeway and was unable to avoid him.

No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.
