MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A family was home when a fire started near 33rd and Vliet in Milwaukee Friday afternoon, Sept. 25.
Authorities were called to the scene just before 3:45 p.m.
A resident told CBS 58 the family got out just in time.
"I just saw something smoking and I ran to my backyard and the barn was burning. Luckily I ran to tell my dad and my sister to wake up because when I got in the kitchen, the kitchen was already on fire," said one of the residents.
Officials say the fire extended to two adjacent houses.
Sixteen people have been displaced, and five firefighters injured, with two suffering from heat exhaustion and three with minor sprains.
The American Red Cross is assisting the families, including 12 adults and four children.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
