NOW: Elkhorn residents mourning as search for killer of local couple continues

ELKHORN, Wis. (CBS 58) – The community continues to mourn a couple killed in an Elkhorn sports bar while fearing for their safety amid the search for their killer.

"I bought the angel with the card," James Dowdal said.

Dowdal was one of the many who paid their respects to 37-year-old Gina Weingart and 33-year-old Emerson Weingart on Friday. The couple were killed at Sports Page Barr early morning on Thursday, Feb. 1. Gina was a bartender who was often accompanied by her husband while at work.

Dowdal tells CBS 58 his contribution to the growing memorial outside the bar, an angel, represents peace and coming together, two things he believes his community needs right now. He also typically comes home from work after midnight, so knowing the person responsible has not been caught worries him.

"Kind of nervous, nerve-racking, you know? Especially with the person that did it not being where they need to be," he said.

Many of the flowers that continue to be placed in front of the bar were purchased right across the street at Wishing Well Florist.

"We've had several people come in, [they] can't believe it happened, they're very nice people. So, a lot of the people around here, that live here, have been buying flowers," Wishing Well Florist owner Jerry Rahn said.

Rahn said the couple's slaying has left him concerned for his community and his safety.

"It makes you think twice. We're a community where we don't expect any of that. A lot of times you walk into your homes or your businesses, and you don't think to maybe lock the back door, and you might now," he said. "Hopefully, they're going to catch the person who did it, and maybe we'll feel safer then."

CBS 58 contacted the Elkhorn Police Department on Friday for an update on the case but did not hear back.
