Early morning blaze destroys garage on Milwaukee's south side

Firefighters said they were called to a garage fire early Wednesday morning, near 9th & Madison on the city's south side.

When crews arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed and had collapsed into itself.

There is no word on a cause. The fire is still under investigation.

The fire started in a car and spread to the garage. It then spread to two 2 houses and 2 other garages.

The main garage was a total loss. There was $30,000 worth of damage done to one of the homes and more minor damage to the other structures-heat damage.

We Energies said that they had to de-energize a line for firefighters. Nine homes lost power as a result. That line was damaged and when firefighters were done We Energies repaired and replaced the line.

Power has since been restored to the nine homes.

Red Cross was on scene and is assisting.

Families at 829 W. Scott Street and 831 W. Scott Street were not able to return to their homes when the Red Cross left. They were briefed by Red Cross on the organizations services and given fire pamphlets and told to call the Red Cross if they need our support.

No injuries were reported.
