MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Today is Cinco de Mayo, and Milwaukee's Mexican community came out to celebrate their heritage and culture.
The holiday celebrates the Battle of Puebla, when Mexican soldiers defeated the French invasion in 1862.
Dozens gathered at The Cooperage in Milwaukee's Harbor District for a holiday market, showing off traditional food, art, clothing, live art and dancers.
People CBS 58 spoke with say today's celebrations are a great way for everyone to learn about different cultures.
They bring exposure to other cultures, and really get to taste what Mexican or Latino tradition is. We're family-oriented events, we promote a healthy environment, we promote culture and tradition. So really being able to represent who we are in our city," said Nataly Andrade, co-founder of Mercadera Market.
Celebrations continue at the Cooperage until 10:00 p.m.
