DNC 2020 host city decision expected soon
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A lot of work has been done in Wisconsin's capital to help bring the 2020 DNC to Milwaukee, but the bid is getting a boost from another state capitol.
CBS 58 has confirmed that Illinois governor JB Pritzker is part of a last-minute effort to make Milwaukee the 2020 DNC host.
A spokeswoman for Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker sent the following statement to CBS 58 saying that the midwest is an important region in helping transform the country between now and 2020. Pritzker's spokeswoman says that Milwaukee being host could boost tourism and revenue in neighboring Illinois.
If Milwaukee is officially announced as the host city, the Common Council will have to meet to approve some final details with the contract. Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton says they're ready.
"We are prepared to review the contract, and approve it after the announcement, and the council is prepared to have the meeting to have a committee meeting and a council meeting to meet those deadlines," said Ald. Ashanti Hamilton, Common Council President, 1st District Milwaukee.
As the host city announcement approaches, Hamilton says he's confident Milwaukee remains a frontrunner.
"We're very optimistic about our chances. There's been a number of people who have worked extremely hard to keep Milwaukee at the forefront of the committee's mind and I think those, and I think those efforts are paying off," Ald. Hamilton said.
Hamilton added tha the believes Wisconsin will have a strong role to play in the 2020 election and that factor gives Milwaukee an edge.
