Dive teams search for missing boater on Delavan Lake

Crews from multiple law enforcement agencies have been searching for a missing boater on Delavan Lake since around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday.  Dive teams worked until around 3:30 a.m., at which point boaters continued the search.  Divers returned to continue their efforts early Thursday morning.

The missing man is a 49-year-old not from the Delavan area.  He jumped from the boat while out with three friends, at some point during his swim he disappeared.  The Town of Delavan Police Chief says he was last seen about 1,000 feet from shore.  Since this is considered a swimmable distance, crews are searching the shoreline and continue to treat this as a search effort and not a recovery.

Delavan Lake is a large lake frequented by mostly sportsmen.  It is not uncommon for boats to be out on the water fishing late into the night.

The man's identity is being withheld while family is contacted.  The Wisconsin DNR is handling the investigation into what led to his disappearance.
