Demolition to begin on MPS' 90-year-old South Stadium

MILWAUKEE -- Demolition is expected to start May 1 on Milwaukee Public Schools' South Stadium, part of a reconstruction project that will make room for district football and soccer games.

The 90-year-old stadium is adjacent to Hayes Bilingual School near 9th and Windlake.

MPS athletes joined MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton, Common Council President Michael Murphy and School Board Director Tatiana Joseph Thursday for a groundbreaking ceremony at the facility.

MPS says the new stadium will host schools across the district and will be the home stadium for Bay View, Bradley Tech and South Division high schools' football and soccer games.

The new stadium will include a turf field, upgraded seating and a concession stand.

The track will go too, so the field can be widened for an ideal-sized soccer field.

The cost of the full project is nearly $9 million, with funding coming from Qualified School Construction Bonds issued by MPS through the city of Milwaukee.

The new stadium should be completed by the end of 2014.
