Death investigation underway after Milwaukee County Jail inmate found unresponsive in cell

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A death investigation is underway at the Milwaukee County Jail Monday, April 5, after a 26-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says correctional officers and medical personnel began performing life-saving measures until the Milwaukee Fire Department arrived and took over. However, the man was pronounced deceased at 12:44 p.m.

The inmate was identified as Anthony Walther of Milwaukee, who was booked into custody on Feb. 16.

Officials say there were no apparent signs of self-harm.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell R. Lucas issued the following statement Monday:

“The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office will cooperate fully with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”
