Current, future owners of Habitat for Humanity-built homes gather for celebration in Harambee neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Habitat for Humanity has been building homes in Milwaukee for a long time, and Wednesday, we heard from some of the people whose lives have been changed by the organization.

They called it a "family reunion" at the site of Habitat homes under construction.

Dozens of current and future owners of Habitat-built homes gathered in Milwaukee's Harambee neighborhood for a lunch and celebration.

Sargento was there- a longtime sponsor of Habitat's work- and so were representatives of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The most compelling stories came from people who helped build and then buy their own homes through Habitat for Humanity.

"I've learned so many different skills on learning how to build my home. Also just naturally, it put me in a place where I was able to begin saving even better," said Dr. Tonya Hall.

"I put the sweat into it, and I can say, 'I did this.' I can lay down at night and say thank you Lord, I have a home where I put work into and it's mine."

Wednesday's reunion was held near 1st and Townsend, where construction is just starting on the 40th and 41st Sargento-sponsored Habitat homes.
