Cudahy woman accused of stealing nearly $80K intended for Stars and Stripes Honor Flight
CUDAHY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Cudahy woman is accused of stealing money intended for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight (SSHF).
According to a criminal complaint, 60-year-old Joni Nogay ran a nonprofit organization called, "We Run -- They Fly" or WRTF. Officials say the purpose of the organization was to gather donations for the SSHF.
From 2016 to 2023, investigators say Nogay solicited donations through fundraising events, including through local businesses and an annual 5k run/walk event. In the seven-year span, authorities say Nogay collected more than $100,000 in donations intended for SSHF.
According to a criminal complaint, Nogay only provided SSHF with approximately $20,000.
Bank records showed, according to the complaint, Nogay consistently deposited SSHF donations into her personal accounts. In total, investigators say Nogay only made five donations to SSHF from 2016-2023 -- totaling $19,861.
The criminal complaint shows a photo posted to Facebook of Nogay from September of 2017, holding an oversized check in the amount of $12,700 -- payable to SSHF. Officials say no such donation was ever made.
In June of 2018, authorities say Nogay posted an image to Facebook of a check in the amount of $35,100 -- payable to SSHF. In the post, Nogay stated, "I will be signing this check for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight." Investigators say no such donation was ever made.
In June of 2019, Nogay posted a photo of another check in the amount of $10,000. That check, according to investigators, was also deposited into Nogay's personal bank account.
The criminal complaint says, Nogay used the money on food, spa services, groceries, Amazon, and more.
Nogay has been charged with one count of theft - business setting (>$10,000 - $100,000). She's due in court for an initial appearance on June 6.
