BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) – Thefts, shootings, and scams have some Brookfield residents on high alert after numerous crimes have been reported within the last month.

Down I-94 you’ll find Brookfield, a place described as quiet and usually very safe.

“That’s one of the reasons I bought rental properties in this area,” says property owner Ross Zoellick.

Zoellick owns several homes in the area and admits recent crimes have not only made him uneasy but also kept him alert.

“Having an incident across the street worries me from the standpoint of being able to rent properties,” says Zoellick.

Just over a week ago police say a man spotted two men rummaging through his neighbor’s car, and when he yelled at them to leave, they shot at him.

The following day (November 11th), a woman was carjacked at a nearby Pik N’ Save.

Just last week, two retail thefts were reported at DSW and AT&T.

Two area hotels have been robbed at gunpoint as well.

Just this morning, a 53-year-old male told police a man with a gun robbed him in his driveway.

“It kind of scares me to be honest because you wouldn’t think there’d be this much crime in this kind of town,” says Brookfield resident Kaden Mierow.

“Something can happen anywhere,” says Zoellick. “I do tell my tenants to keep the lights on. I also have dusk to dawn lights on my properties.”

“I think the more people know about the issue, the less it’ll happen,” says Mierow.

“I hope the crime level stays below what it’s at now and that there isn’t decline from any of the recent crime,” says Zoellick.

So far, there has only been one arrest in all of these cases.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Brookfield Police Department.
