Complaint: Kenosha father shot 4-year-old while cleaning gun, child flown to Milwaukee hospital
Wisconsin Court System KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 22-year-old Kenosha man is being charged after prosecutors say a gun went off while he was cleaning it, shooting a 4-year-old child who was later flown to Children’s Wisconsin in Milwaukee for surgery.
Travon Prater is charged with injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon, child neglect causing great bodily harm and THC possession, all as a repeater, in the April 7 shooting.
Police say Prater told officers he was reassembling a Glock 17, inserted the magazine and the gun "went off" while the child was nearby.
A criminal complaint says the child was shot through the buttock with an exit wound near the pelvis. Investigators say officers found the gun on a kitchen table, marijuana in Prater’s pocket and other weapons and drug-related items inside the home.
Prater's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 16.
