Community mural unveiled in Milwaukee south side neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A new mural is bringing color and cheer to a neighborhood on Milwaukee's south side.

The mural was unveiled Friday.

It covers the back of the El Rey grocery store. Muralist Tia Richardson was involved, but she didn't do this by herself. She worked with young artists from the Milwaukee Christian Center, not only to paint it but to come up with the design. The whole project is meant to inspire young people.

"Hopefully by seeing any of these images you might recognize something yourself and know that you're not alone.  And that because it took a whole group of people to make this, that means there are other people who care," Richardson said.

"The world is so, nowadays is so sad and non-expressive and colorful.  But just to put this small little piece of mural in a huge community and people be a part of the community brings a lot of like colorful and happiness," said Jessica Baskerville, an MCC youth artist.

The mural can be seen at 13th and Forest Home.
