MENASHA, Wis. (CBS 58) — An EF-3 tornado near Menasha left behind broken trees, damaged homes and a long road to recovery. On Doty Island, cleanup is underway, and it's bringing out the best in neighbors.

Cleanup started at 6 a.m. near Pine Street, while a second crew focused on Park Street.

"This is the most devastation I've ever seen in my life here," Doty Island resident Jana Nantelle said.

For Nantelle, it's heartbreaking to see her neighborhood like this.

"It's really hard to see it, but we are strong and we will recover," Nantelle said.

It's also a time for the community to come together.

Near Seventh Street and Nicolet Boulevard, neighbors are calling one relief site the "Little White Tent," where people can pick up food, water, diapers and other necessities.

"We've got people on bicycles, with coolers, and they're riding around the neighborhood where the work is being done," Doty Island resident Kathie Boyette said.

Volunteers have been showing up with trucks, cleanup supplies and even hot plates to boil water.

A boil-water advisory remains in effect for City of Menasha residents who receive their water from the Village of Fox Crossing Water Utility. Doty Island residents who live on the Neenah side are not affected.

"One guy flagged me down today and said, 'I still need a crane in my backyard,' and I said, 'We can do that,'" volunteer Lance Wallace said.

Wallace came to help because he knows what it's like to lose everything.

"A lot of big hearts are out here," Wallace said. "I went through a flood last year in Milwaukee. My house got flooded. I had to use a canoe to get out."

For neighbors like Boyette, that's what makes the area special.

"This is Doty Island, and we're one big family, and we're helping everyone," Boyette said.
