13 people injured after 10 car chain reaction crash closes I-94

A chain reaction collision in Jefferson County involving 10 vehicles and injuring 13 people closed the westbound lanes of I-94 this morning, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The multi-vehicle incident began around 8:35 AM on I-94 near Lake Mills.  According to the State Patrol a westbound car drifted into the median’s shoulder.   The driver over-corrected and lost control of the car, colliding with the guard rail.   The driver of the car was not injured.

Soon after the single car crash, the State Patrol said four other vehicles collided nearby.   The four-vehicle crash completely closed the westbound lanes of I-94.   The State Patrol reports that six people received non-life threatening injures in the crash.

A third crash happened about a mile away when five vehicles collided again blocking the westbound lanes.   Seven people were injured in this accident and were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.   The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating this accident.

The State Patrol reports that in total, the backup from the three crashes reached up to 8 ½ miles.   The closure lasted until just before 10 AM when I-94 westbound was reported to traffic.
