Center Street Bridge Demolition Set for this Weekend
Equipment is now in place for the demolition of the Center St Bridge that straddles the I-41/US-45 corridor. Demolition is set to start late Friday night around 10p.m. and last until 10 a.m. Saturday, then take place overnight Saturday into Sunday during the same time.
Since the bridge crosses over the freeway there will be some overnight closures. I-41/US-45 southbound will be closed at Burleigh and in the northbound direction at Mayfair Rd. The freeway is expected to reopen each morning by 10 a.m. Drivers should use Hwy 100 as a main detour if you are traveling late either Friday or Saturday.
According to the DOT the demolition of the Center St bridge is expected to create noise in the area as well as dust and some vibration. Equipment is in place to monitor the demolition to make sure it is within allowable levels.
Center street is a heavily traveled route for many students in the area. Eisenhower Elementary, Wauwatosa high school and Whitman Middle School all lie within the construction zone.
Parents and students should utilize the following detours during construction:
Drivers can access Eisenhower Elementary and Wauwatosa West High School via North Ave to 124th St. if they are coming from the south. If you are traveling from the north, then use Burleigh to 124th and access Center from there.
Drivers that need to access Whitman middle School can do so via Hwy 100.
Residents in the area will see an increase in traffic in area neighborhoods and city streets throughout the construction process.
Construction is set to wrap on the newly rebuilt Center St. bridge by September 2016.
