NOW: Carmen Northwest will move to former HOPE High School building in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Since last fall, Carmen Schools of Science and Technology leaders have been searching for a new home after getting kicked out of the building they were renting from Milwaukee Public Schools.

Now, they'll be relocating to the former HOPE High School building on N. MLK Jr. Dr. this summer so they can be ready for the 2026-2027 school year.

School officials said this facility means they'll have air-conditioning for the first time and a large, updated gym.

"I wasn't worried about Carmen Northwest's future; I was concerned for our students and their families. I know how displacement can cause anxiety or confusion, loss maybe," said Assistant Principal Antonia Redic. "Going to a community that's known historically in Milwaukee for how they cultivate African American culture and history, just to be able to provide education in that area for our students so they can learn more about that aspect, I'm really excited."

The new spot about six and a half miles from the current Northwest building on N. 72nd St., and officials added that they are currently working on a transportation plan to ensure that every student at Carmen can remain a student there despite the address change.
