MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- UW-Milwaukee Police are reaching out and teaching students how to be safe through Campus Safety Week which officially kicked off Monday.
Self-defense demonstrations were performed outside of the Student Union. It's a sad coincidence that this special week started after the attack in Las Vegas but the Police Chief says the lessons here can be applied to situations like that.
"If you'd see what happened in Las Vegas, one of the things one of the things you'd want everyone there to know is situational awareness. What should I do if it happens? Where should I go if it should happen? Who should I talk to if it happens? Those are the things that we try to teach people," said Chief Joseph LeMire of the UWM Police Department.
Along with active shooter training, UWM Police are teaching students CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
