Cab driver wearing Nazi swastika armband suspended

New York City, NY (WPIX) -- A cab driver spotted nonchalantly wearing a Nazi swastika armband while on duty has been suspended, PIX11 has learned.

The Anti-Defamation League, which received multiple complaints about the cabbie, issued a statement praising the Taxi and Limousine Commission decision to suspend the unidentified driver.

\"By openly displaying this hate symbol identified with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party while operating a New York City taxicab,\" said New York Regional Director Evan R. Bernstein. \"The driver sent a frightening and offensive message to New Yorkers about who might be welcome – and unwelcome - in the taxicab he was driving.\"

The driver's operator license has been suspended for 30 days, according to the ADL.

The TLC released a statement Wednesday regarding the incident. \"Following a consumer complaint, the TLC investigated allegations that a licensee wearing a swastika armband acted provocatively while in the process of driving a New York City taxicab,\" the statement read.

The TLC said they suspended the driver on the grounds that \"while performing the duties and responsibilities of a Licensee, a Licensee must not deliberately perform or attempt to perform, alone or with another, any act that is against the best interests of the public, although not specifically mentioned in these rules.\"
