Broadcasting Club gives students at Milwaukee Parkside School a taste of the newsroom
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- All schools offer extracurricular activities. Some are creative and unique, and others are found all over the country.
At Milwaukee Parkside School, the principal wanted to put students use of technology, social engagement and emerging trends to good use. All of those skills that many kids often use on YouTube and TikTok, can easily transfer to news and storytelling.
Perhaps that's what attracted dozens of kids to the Broadcasting Club.
Some students work on air delivering the daily stories. Others work behind the scenes gathering information and editing clips and video together.
Lainey Techtmann is in seventh grade.
"I think making sure you get everything done on time is the most challenging part," said Techtmann.
The students share ideas back and forth all week, but they meet before school twice a week to record, edit and put a "show" together.
"We have sportscasters and meteorologists. And we've got the behind the scenes-- the camera operators and video editors-- and they're the ones who kind of piece it all together afterwards," said Sean Veternick the teacher who runs the club.
Twice a week, the show it's then aired across the school as part of the announcements.
"It gets put out to the class and we get to watch ourselves, which I think is really cool," said Techtmann."Sometimes when I'm in the hallways kids are like 'oh my God I recognize you from the newscast',"
Their audience may not go beyond the walls at Parkside. But the goal is the same as any station. Tell stories, share information and whatever happens... just keep talking.
