Brewers owner Attanasio addresses possible lockout, TV deal and lack of free agency deals
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Each day on the first full day of Brewers spring training, Principal Owner Mark Attanasio addresses the team and sets the tone for the 2026 season. But 2027, will that happen? And the Brewers TV deal. Questions remain.
How concerned is he about a lockout in 2027 and the TV deal as well?
"Being in the investment business for 35 years," Attanasio says, "I have a little facility with numbers. And the challenges at what's now mainstream sports were not a surprise to me. Owners and the players association gonna try to figure out how to do this to keep that season. You know, we're not even at the pregame yet. This is really early."
Lance Allan asks, "So it's not inevitable?"
"I'm just saying we're not even at the bargaining table yet. So, I'm not supposed to talk about labor. That's just a fact. So, you know, it's a media content thing, and obviously it's of concern to everyone. But you can't even say early innings. You can't even say pregame," Attanasio says.
Why did he feel like not adding a ton of payroll now or a ton of players now, or a bunch of free agent signings?
"We have players at the right side of the aging, the left side of the aging curve," Attanasio says. "The best side. They're reaching their peak. You wanna say peak is 28, whatever. A lot of guys are under 28 with the right, what you say, Lance, the right mix. A lot of the teams we compete with big names. The guys are on the other side. Now they're established players. So, they're gonna be tough to beat, but you know, the team, the way we assembled it, won the most games in the major leagues last year. We're not gonna rest on our laurels. We know how hard that is to do. But there's no reason not to be encouraged."
Attanasio did address the special nature of the clubhouse, saying culture matters to this team.
