The Brewers pulled away late for a 9-2 win over Cincinnati on Sunday, but failed to gain ground in the playoff chase after the Pirates beat the Cubs.
Matt Clark hit another home run for the Crew, who now take on the Cardinals for a three-game series beginning Tuesday in St. Louis.
Mark Reynolds also hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, helping the Brewers to their fourth win in five games. Matt Garza tossed six-plus innings, and allowed just one run.
Milwaukee is still 1 1/2 games back of Pittsburgh for the second wild card position.
