Boys & Girls Club celebrates national debut of new program in Wauwatosa
CBS 58 WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A new learning program through the Boys & Girls Club is making its national debut in Wauwatosa.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee held a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, Aug. 21, at Underwood Elementary School, to celebrate the new Blue Door Academy program's expansion in the Wauwatosa School District.
The academy piloted at Underwood over the summer with 100 participants and will expand to all 10 Tosa elementary schools on Sept. 1.
It's a before-school, after-school, and junior kindergarten care program focused on fun ways to learn, play, and build social and emotional skills.
"To give parents the opportunity to stem the brain drain over summer months and then actually have that child ready for the school year -- the value of that is enormous," said Jeff Snell, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. "And it gives, most importantly for the parents, that peace of mind that they know their child is cared for in that safe place, where they feel they belong."
Once implemented in the fall, Wauwatosa will be Blue Door Academy's first and largest footprint in the country, with potentially up to 1,000 elementary-aged members.
Sign-up is still open for this fall.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee expects to see the academy grow into other local and national school districts soon.
