Black history elected class at Greendale High School drawing scrutiny
GREENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A proposed elected class at Greendale High School is drawing scrutiny.
At a virtual meeting Monday night, Dec. 7, the Greendale Board of Education addressed a possible Black history/ethnic studies course for the 2021 school year. The group People Advocating for Greendale Equity (PAGE) say they are pleased with the idea but says the district needs to do more such as hiring more diverse faculty.
Board members read PAGE's comments at the virtual meeting.
"PAGE's primary concern is that a rushed proposal for a single elective course may create an ineffective and superficial solution to a deep systemic problem of lack of representation, and thus may fail to achieve the objective of increasing representation for all students," said Jonathan Mitchell, Director of Business Services with the Greendale Schools.
The board plans to revisit the issue at its next board meeting.
