Governor Walker signed a bill into law that prohibits a person from driving while using a cell phone in a construction zone or utility work area, except to report an emergency.
Assembly Bill 198 was signed by Walker on Wednesday.
The prohibition does not apply to the use of voice-operated or hands-free device if the person does not use his or her hands to operate the device, except to activate or deactivate a feature or function of the device.
Persons who violate this prohibition may be required to forfeit not less than $20 nor more than $40 for the first offense and not less than $50 nor more than $100 for a second or subsequent offense within one year.
The bill passed the Assembly on a voice vote and was concurred by the Senate on a voice vote. It is Act 308.
