Bango hands out free Bucks tickets to fire safety poster contest winners

A group of Milwaukee students were treated to lunch at Milwaukee's main fire house Thursday.

They received top honors for a poster contest about fire safety.

Bango, the Bucks mascot, was on hand to hand out game tickets and provide a few laughs.

"You were supposed to draw a picture of fire in your bedroom," explained Viktorya Fifer, a 5th grader at the Spanish Immersion School. "You had to write hear the beep when you sleep every bedroom needs a working smoke detector."

The special lunch   was also an opportunity for the students to see up close what it takes to be a firefighter.

It's Part of a continuing education program with the department that starts in second grade and progresses through the years.

MFD Chief Mark Rohlfing says it has been known to show benefits long after the children grow up.

"We find that when we ask college students or high school students what to do you do in case of a fire, they will repeat the things they learned in grade school."
