'Apply as soon as possible': 1 week left to apply for FEMA assistance after August floods

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Homeowners, renters, business owners and private nonprofits who experienced property damage from August floods in the area have one week remaining to apply for federal assistance, with the deadline set for Wednesday, Nov. 12.

FEMA has distributed over $143.7 million to 29,291 Milwaukee County residents and households to date, according to a Wednesday, Nov. 5 statement from the office of County Executive David Crowley.

"With the federal assistance deadline just days away, I urge everyone who was affected by the floods to apply as soon as possible so no one misses the chance to get help," Crowley said.

Applicants must complete and submit a FEMA application even if damage was previously reported to 211, MMSD or a damage assessments team in late August. Eligible Milwaukee County residents can apply online, by phone at (800) 621-3362 or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center or Disaster Survivor Assistance location.

Residents who disagree with FEMA's decision or the amount of money approved can submit an appeal within 60 days of the date noted on their FEMA letter.
