Apartment building evacuated because of fire

BROOKFIELD - A fire at the Norhardt Crossing Apartments forced more than 30 people out of their homes Sunday.  The blaze broke out just after 1:30PM. Officials say it started on a second floor porch and spread to the building, the third floor and the attic. No one was hurt, but the building houses some elderly people and some with disabilities. The fire went to two alarms so firefighters could go in and help everyone out of the building safely. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. It's believed all the residents except those living in three apartments were able to return to their homes Sunday night. Karen Mahnke, a resident outside walking her dog was the first to notice the fire. She went around and pounded on people's windows to let them know to get out of the building.
