MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Couture is re-shaping Milwaukee's skyline, soon to be the tallest residential building in the state.

First announced in 2012, it took nine years for construction to begin. Now, it's near completion.

Progress is moving quickly, but there's still nearly 40 floors left to be built.

"It's a skyline enhancing project. It's going to change the skyline in Milwaukee," said The Couture's developer, Rick Barrett.

The Couture will add 322 residential units to Milwaukee's lakefront by next year.

"This week we completed the 5th floor, which is a milestone, because that's our first apartment level with residences," said Eric Sadler, senior project manager with Findorff Construction.

CBS 58 took a hard-hat tour on Thursday.

"We're very excited to be going vertical from here on out. We're going to be moving a floor every four days," Barrett said.

Now with finished concrete, the third floor will be partially outdoors, with green space and retail.

25% of the total building will be for public use.

"We've got 50,000 square feet of retail that is now walkable, that we can walk retailers through," Barrett said.

You can expect to see the 44-floor building grow quickly throughout the summer.

They're on schedule, with a big crew on site daily.

"Right now, we're working on the concrete structure, and that lends itself to 100, 150 guys a day," Barrett said.

The top floor will likely be finished this October.

"We should have units available for people to walk through this fall," Barrett said.

The development is expected to bring more hustle and bustle to a busy downtown area.

"Between all the trains and buses and everything, it's just going to be a hub of excitement and energy," Sadler said.

The Couture will be fully complete by spring of 2024.
