Activists arrested after taking beagles from Ridglan Farms breeding, research facility
Direct Action Everywhere DANE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Dane County officials say roughly 20 activists were arrested Sunday, after breaking into Ridglan Farms in the Town of Blue Mounds and taking several beagles.
Ridglan Farms- overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP)- is a dog breeding and research facility that supplies beagles to laboratories for biomedical research. They had previously agreed to surrender their breeding license by July 1 of this year as part of a settlement following an animal welfare investigation. Under the terms of the settlement, Ridglan must surrender its DATCP license to breed dogs by this date, but the company is still allowed to operate as a research facility.
According to activists, several beagles were rescued from the property Sunday; however, eight were recovered by law enforcement and sent back to Ridglan, where they say about 2,000 more dogs remain.
The sheriff's office says those arrested Sunday include 44-year-old Wayne Hsiung, 29-year-old Aditya Aswani, and 29-year-old Dean Wyrzykowski. Officials say Aswani was booked into the Dane County Jail on a tentative burglary charge, while Hsiung and Wyrzkowski were booked on tentative criminal trespassing charges.
Hsiung, an animal rights lawyer, posted updates on social media Tuesday; he said he's out of jail and urged the public to contact the Dane County District Attorney's Office, asking them to protect the puppies that remain at Ridglan Farms.
