MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett recently sent a letter to the Amazon CEO to consider the city as a location for its next distribution center.
This comes after reports Amazon was considering a large distribution center in Oak Creek. Amazon released a statement stating, "they are not yet commenting on specific plans in Wisconsin."
"It would be a total game changer," said Mayor Tom Barrett.
In the letter, Barrett invites Amazon to build a distribution center on Milwaukee's north side in close proximity to people looking for work, in a neighborhood with high unemployment. Barrett hopes Amazon will change the way it looks at site locations and bring opportunities to the central city.
"I know what an incredibly positive impact it would have to reduce crime, to help with housing, to stabilize neighborhoods because if you bring in one thousand, two thousand jobs into an economically depressed neighborhood. Overnight, it's going to change things," Mayor Tom Barrett said.
Barrett proposed Century City and the Northridge locations for possible locations for the site. The mayor has not heard back from Amazon.
CBS 58 is working to confirm if there will be an Amazon distribution center in Oak Creek. We reached out to the developer but we are still waiting to hear back.
