80th US Women’s Open set to tee off at beautiful Erin Hills
WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- It’s the 80th edition of the US Women’s Open at Erin Hills. We caught up with world number one Nelly Korda who knows the wind will be a challenge this week.
"Yes, I think weather plays a pretty big role out here," Nelly Korda says. "Especially with kind of no coverage, no trees to kind of block it. Kind of a very big open field, so when it gets windy out here, it’s really gonna play with your golf ball. So it’s just kind of seeing what the day has in store and having a game plan for it."
USGA CEO and outgoing LPGA commissioner Mike Whan is from the Chicago area. But he can’t praise Wisconsin golf enough.
"I can’t believe you’re gonna make me, as a Chicagoan, say this. You must be local, and you need a soundbite," Mike Whan says. "But it is a great sports town. It drives me crazy because as the Bears, we’ve been watching your great sports town and your celebrations for a long time. I just think the sports IQ is high in Wisconsin. People don’t just like the sport. They really learn it. Know it. And you know, the airplane conversations flying into here are just better. So, I can't believe you made me say that in front of all my Chicagoans. But it’s a great place to come. It’s really quite a track you’ve built around Wisconsin. You’re welcome."
The U.S. Women's Open's eight-decades string is the longest-running women’s professional championship.
