MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee community celebrated an advocate of social justice on Sunday, March 10.
The 6th annual César Chávez birthday celebration was held at the Marcus Performing Arts Center this afternoon.
Chávez was a civil rights activist who spent most of his life advocating for fair pay for farm workers and better working conditions.
Organizers say the celebration's programming highlights the youth in our community who, every year, interpret Chávez's words through student contests.
"It is important to follow the legacy to continue to empower our children, so they know where they are coming from, who their leaders were even though were probably very young or not even born, it is important to know who was behind us," said Diana Billstrom, planning committee.
Local leaders, such as Mayor Cavalier Johnson, also spoke at the event.
Our own Montse Ricossa was also there emceeing today's celebration.
