MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Authorities are investigating following the death of an inmate at the Milwaukee County Jail. 

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday, May 21, a correctional officer conducting a housing unit inspection located a 33-year-old inmate unconscious and in medical distress. 

The officer declared a medical emergency. 

Officials say multiple officers and supervisors responded and began lifesaving measures, including two doses of Narcan, but the man did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Per Wisconsin law, the MCSO is not investigating itself in this matter. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is now investigating.
