3 Injured, dozens displaced after Madison apartment fire

MADISON-- Three people were injured when a fire broke out at an apartment building on University Ave near the UW Madison campus.

Crews responded to the fire just before midnight. When the arrived on scene they saw smoke billowing from the eastern section of the three story apartment building.

Dozens of people had to be evacuated and two people were rescued from a third floor window after being unable to escape through the smoke and fire.

Firefighters also helped a man on the first floor who was making his way to the front door when they arrived.

He was taken to UW Hospital for treatment.

Two firefighters were also taken to UW Hospital where they were treated and released.

Crews noticed that a number of residents were exhibiting some signs of smoke inhalation so paramedics set up a medical triage area to assess possible injuries, but no one else was taken to the hospital.

The apartment building has three segments separated by a hallway. Residents from two of the building sections were allowed back into their apartments, but residents from the third section, where the fire is believed to have started, will not be able to live there for the foreseeable future.

Between 20 and 30 residents have been displaced by the fire.

In addition to emergency responders, UW officials reported to the scene to assist students.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
