MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say a 55-year-old driver has died after being struck by a car that ran a red traffic light Tuesday, March 5.

It happened around 4 p.m. near 43rd and Villard.

Officials say a vehicle traveling westbound at 42nd and Villard ran a light at the intersection of N. Sherman Boulevard and W. Villard Avenue, striking a second vehicle. The collision caused the second vehicle to flip over, striking a third and fourth vehicle which were both stopped at the red light.

The driver of the flipped vehicle was taken to an area hospital and pronounced deceased. An 11-year-old passenger of the vehicle was also taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.

Police say the driver of the third and fourth vehicles involved did not sustain any injuries. They say the fourth vehicle involved was a marked Milwaukee police squad, occupied by a 37-year-old officer who was uninjured and a 33-year-old officer who sustained an injury that did not require medical attention.

A person who lives close by says accidents happen here all the time.

"This week it's been like three accidents," said Cortez White, neighbor. "Like one right there by the bus stop and then after one happened at the bus stop, like an hour later another one happened."

The 31-year-old driver of vehicle one was taken into custody.

Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County DA's Office.
